When you sign up to ride, you are supporting Greenhouse Scholars, but you can take your support a step further by becoming a Greenhouse Scholars Fundraiser. Once you start asking for donations, you’ll be surprised by how many people want to support you. Each participant is required to fundraise $75.

→ Donate to Greenhouse Scholars
→ Donate by sponsoring a participant or team
→ Download the Donation Tracker Form to send in your donation by mail

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/67987/873779/section-fundraising.jpg" width="639" height="48" width_o="639" height_o="48" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/67987/873779/section-fundraising_o.jpg" data-mid="5057368" border="0" align="left"/>

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/67987/873779/section-how-to-ask.jpg" width="639" height="48" width_o="639" height_o="48" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/67987/873779/section-how-to-ask_o.jpg" data-mid="5057382" border="0" align="left"/>
We know it’s not easy to ask for money, but when it’s for a good cause it’s worth it, and when it’s for a great cause, like ours, how could you feel guilty? The first step to getting started is to set a goal. Set your fundraising goal high, higher than you think and beyond the $75 required – when donors know what your personal goal is, it will motivate them to give more. The second step – create a fundraising plan and follow through with it. Your plan should include these six steps:

1. Identify your potential supporters. This is a list of everyone you know and everyone you have contact with – friends and family, college roommates, your checker at the grocery store, colleagues, acquaintances, or the barista at your local coffee shop. Never assume people can’t or won’t donate; you never know who will be willing to support you unless you ask.

2. Engage your potential donors before you ask them for a donation. Start early and talk with all potential donors (again, that’s everyone) about your participation in the ride and your goals: for riding and for fundraising.

3. Know where the money is going. Familiarize yourself with Greenhouse Scholars. Feel free to share the website, Scholars' stories, and the organization's goals – the more confidently you can discuss where a donor’s money will go, the more confident a donor will feel in making a large donation. (Contact us if you have specific questions.)

4. Get ready to ask. When you ask, be straightforward. The most successful approach is to ask prospective donors for a specific amount – particularly those with potential (ask for $10, $50, $100, or more).

5. Follow up. Once you’ve asked, don’t forget to follow up. If you don’t follow up, donors may assume you reached your goal and don’t need their support. Training and fundraising updates are a great way to remind people of your commitment and let them know you still need their support.

6. The magic word(s). Of course, you’ll say please when asking for donations, but don’t forget to thank your donors. A great thank-you ranges from a simple note to a personalized thank-you video. Make your donors part of your Venus de Miles experience; they’ll appreciate it.

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/67987/873779/section-five-tips.jpg" width="639" height="48" width_o="639" height_o="48" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/67987/873779/section-five-tips_o.jpg" data-mid="5057389" border="0" align="left"/>
Whether you write it out or ask in person, by phone, or by email, asking is the most important part of fundraising. Here are some other fun ideas to jumpstart your fundraising.

CELEBRATE YOURSELF
Celebrate yourself, Greenhouse Scholars, and Venus de Miles the best way you can…by throwing a party. Whether a sushi party, a film screening, or a friendly game of kickball, gathering all your friends together is a great way to gain support and funds. Make sure people know why they’re attending – to raise funds for you and have a blast.

CLEAN OUT THE ATTIC & BRING IN THE CASH
Time to get rid of all of those miscellaneous items in the garage and attic. Ask your friends to do the same. Put it in your front yard and sell, sell, sell! Put all the money raised toward your fundraising goal!

LEAVE YOUR DONATION AFTER THE BEEP
Change out your voicemail message to alert everyone who calls you that you are up to something special, and let them know that you need their support. Or, add a line about why you’re riding as a signoff on your personal email.

ADVERTISE YOURSELF
You don’t have to pay to get ad space. Ask your local church, bulletin, college newspaper, or company newsletter to place an ad or write a story about you and why you are fundraising for Venus de Miles. Call your favorite radio station and ask it to make an announcement on your behalf; you may even get a spot on the air.

GET SOCIAL
Using social media to raise awareness is a great way to not only get not only your friends, but their friends geared up for the ride. Create a YouTube video and post it on your Facebook page, keep people updated on your training and fundraising progress through Twitter, or ask five of your out-of-touch Facebook friends for their support.
